'From ancient times to the 19th century, the people of Bengal have used the cowri (kori) as a medium of exchange. Its use first began to decline after British rule acquired monopoly in issuing and controlling the medium of exchange in the second half of the 19th century. Paper currency was first introduced then', writes Siddique Mahmudur Rahman in his book 'Cowri to Taka, Evolution of Coins and Currencies of Bangladesh'.

A government body to probe last year’s devastating fire at Tazreen Fashions Ltd in Ashulia has found “unpardonable neglect” on the part of the owner but said the incident might have been “subversive”.

আমার সঙ্গে সৈয়দ আলী আহসান স্যারের সরাসরি কোনো যোগাযোগ ছিল না। আমি তাঁর ছাত্র ছিলাম না, এমনকি কিশোর বয়সটা আমার পূর্ব পাকিস্তান বা পূর্ব বাংলাতেও কাটেনি। পিতার দূতাবাসে চাকরি সূত্রে কলকাতায় আমার সবটুকু স্কুলজীবন কেটেছে। কলকাতায় একজন বিশিষ্ট সাহিত্যিক, কাজী আবদুল ওদুদ সাহেবের বাসায় আমরা ভাড়া থাকতাম। তাঁর পাঠকক্ষেই আমার সাহিত্যের হাতেখড়ি, তিপ্পান্ন থেকে পঁয়ষট্টি সাল পর্যন্ত যশোরে উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক, ডিগ্রি ও মাস্টার্স পড়ার সময়ও মাঝে মাঝে তাঁর লেখা নিয়ে যশোর সাহিত্য আসরে আলোচনা হয়েছে, খবরের কাগজে তাঁর কিছু লেখা পড়ার সৌভাগ্যও হয়েছে। তাঁর ছবিও বেশ ক’বার খবরের কাগজে দেখেছি। ঢাকার সঙ্গে আমার কোনো যোগাযোগ না থাকায় তাঁকে চাক্ষুষ দেখিনি আমি। কিন্তু অজান্তেই আমি একজন ভক্ত হয়ে পড়েছিলাম তাঁর লেখা পড়ে এবং আশপাশের লেখক-সাহিত্যিকদের আলোচনা শুনে।

‘তুমি আমাকে বিশ্বাস কর রাবেয়া, যতক্ষণ আমার দেহে প্রাণ আছে, কোন বিপদ তোমাকে ছুঁতে পারবে না’, স্বরে উদ্বেগ নিয়ে ফিসফিস করে বলল যুবকটি।

SIDDIQUE MAHMUDUR RAHMAN was born in 4 September 1946 in Jessore. His father Fazlur Rahman worked in the DPI and Foreign Service, wrote a few literary works and mother Sajeda Rahman, a graduate from Shantiniketan, was a housewife and an authoress. Siddique had his school education from Kolkata during 1953-65, as his father worked in the then Pakistan Deputy High Commission there.

Mahfuzur Rahman makes some points on a volume of poetry.
Most of us Bengalis profess to love our mother tongue. Most of us also think of the language movement as a quest for national identity. Twenty-first February 1952 stands out as a symbol of both. It speaks for Bengali language and identity. Does it also speak for other languages in the world?
Muhammad Habibur Rahman, eminent jurist, writer of scores of books, and himself a veteran of the language movement, apparently thinks so, as do many others. The United Nations declaration of the day as the International Mother Language Day underlined the symbolism.
